Lansdowne FC in Dublin
Lansdowne is one of Irelands leading domestic Rugby clubs. They play their home games on the back pitch of Irelands National stadium, the Aviva, at Lansdowne Road, Dublin.
In an ever-competitive world, top sports teams look for an edge to place themselves above their competitors. Video analysis, a commonly used tool in modern sports, can provide a training boost for individuals and teams. Coaches and trainers analyse video from live action and training exercises, and the results of their careful analyses provide helpful feedback for the players.
Lansdowne FC asked our associate company Libirel Communications to design and install a camera system that would give them premium level camera coverage with capture and record.
Case study of Lansdowne Football Club
As with any custom system, local structures heavily influence both choice and method of installation. The choice of camera was easy, using PTZ Optics 20x Zoom PTZ cameras that offer HDSDI, NDI and RTSP outputs for capture. Crystal clear High Definition 1080p video with lossless 20X optical zoom lets you get up close to see and interact with your team. The senior coaching staff at Lansdowne required a camera placed on each side of the pitch – North, South, East and West. The cameras were installed on existing lighting poles and perimeter fencing. Discussions with stadium management resulted in the choice to power the cameras over ethernet (PoE). This required the use of repeaters to overcome ethernet distance limitations, as the furthest distance from the clubhouse switch was 250 metres.
In addition to connecting each camera with ethernet we added a suitably gauged video coax to carry the HDSDI as a backup feed. Housing the cameras to survive and perform in all weathers is key. For this we used the only option in the form of the Dotworkz enclosure. The D Series IP68 Camera Housing professional grade outdoor video surveillance protection systems are optimized for Pan Tilt and Zoom video cameras, including the latest HD/Megapixel network camera technologies.
All signals are fed back to the clubhouse on dedicated routes with repeaters placed where needed. The PoE feeds to each camera originate from a PoE switch in the clubhouse and the video feeds land on a coax termination panel. The club are lucky to have a fabulous clubhouse with a glazed bar area overlooking the south goal end of the pitch. From here the club operates its video recording on match days. There is a relatively elaborate set-up with a main and back-up recording, PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) control on the East and West Cameras as well as an ability to recall pre-set positions on the North and South cameras behind the respective goals, using a custom made Rasperry Pi driven controller.
Lansdowne FC use SportsCode as their analysis tool and in the latest version it is possible to capture the four RTSP streams provided by the cameras. This allows a neat deployment with four network feeds from the PoE switch connecting two Mac laptops and two PTZ controllers. The SportsCode software allows users to capture live video and subsequently code the recording so that specific instances can be grouped and retrieved for analysis and it can also offer vital statistical information associated with the corresponding video.
The system, at Lansdowne, will be expanded next season to include live streaming to the club’s own TV channel and additionally distribute the feed on the internal video distribution network to the multiple displays in the Bar and Function Room areas. Lansdowne TV will be available to download on the custom App provided by Domestream as well as being available on any web browser. The upload and delivery of the stream is also handled by Domestream, an associate of Libirel Communications.
In all, the installation provides the club with a comprehensive video capture, analysis, and distribution system with the addition of providing a local live TV channel. The turnkey system was provided by Libirel Communications.
